Topic: Optimization of Steel Mill Processes with Artificial Intelligence Methods

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods have been used to optimize production processes in the steel mill sector in such a way that an improvement of more than 50 percent in surface quality for high-grade grades for the automotive industry has been achieved. The key innovation is to use AI methods not only to predict surface quality, but to prevent surface defects from forming in the process.
The technology, developed jointly with Smart Steel Technologies, was successfully taken into permanent production operation. Both partners have since rolled out the system to additional use cases across multiple product ranges and process stages. The methods allow production or logistics processes to be optimized in other industries as well.
